Novak Djokovic was asked about Roger Federer and the recent news that he won't compete until the midpoint of the 2022 season and Djokovic gave a heartfelt response.
It's been a while since Novak Djokovic and Roger Federer played on the ATP Tour and that is mostly to Federer struggling a lot with injuries. The repeated knee surgeries have kept Federer away from the court and Djokovic hopes to see Federer back on the court. It's a sentiment many share and speaking on the topic Djokovic said:
“Obviously Roger is an icon of our sport and people around the world love him. They love watching him play, love seeing him around. He’s very important for our sport on and off the court. So for the sake of our sport, I sincerely hope that we can see him play at least another time.”
Djokovic is certain that Federer will find a way to play tennis once more as he explained that the way he played lastly at Wimbledon was not the way to go for him. He said:
“I’m sure he doesn’t want to end his career this way. I think he’s gonna definitely try to give it a last push, a last try. I’m not sure what his injury is, and I know he’s been struggling with a knee for quite a few years. So, yeah, let’s see.”
He finished off with:
“I think for everything that he has achieved and created for this sport, he deserves to play and he deserves to have a proper farewell, I mean, if his injury is not allowing him to play, so to say, more frequently on the tour.”
