Rafael Nadal got his
US Open underway with a 4-set victory over Rinky Hijikata explaining that he needs to stay humble.
Nadal dropped the first set of the match forcing him to take a step back and rethink his approach. He changed his play moving forward and was able to change the course of the match. After, he admitted that the 3-year wait was long but he was happy to be back in New York:
"It's been a long wait. For some time I thought I may not be able to be back, so I am super happy. Night sessions are the best. I just have to be humble and accept the process, day after day in practices and matches and stay positive."
Next up for Nadal is Italian Fabio Fognini who came back from down two sets to love against Aslan Karatsev to win the match in five. They know each other really well.
