Italy’s
Matteo Berrettini has opened up about his struggles
with injuries and stated that he cried all day in ‘bed’ after missing so much
tennis in the recent past.
The 27-year-old has been in impressive form in the third
Grand Slam of the year where he has booked his spot in the fourth round.
Talking after the match about his feelings following his victory,
the world number 38 stated that he missed playing tennis at the highest level because
of fitness concerns.
“I spent many days in my bed crying about not being able to
play,” he said. “So five days in a row, it's nothing. It’s sad, but it's true.
I miss playing, I miss competing. People that are close to me, they know about
it. So it's so special, I found extra energy, I'm finding [it] every day. I'm
so glad that I'm here and you guys are unbelievable. Thank you for the support.”
Berrettini defeated fellow countryman Lorenzo Sonego in the first
round of
Wimbledon with a score of 6-7, 6-3, 7-6, 6-3.
In the second round, he outclassed Australia’s Alex de
Minaur in straight sets with a score of 6-3, 6-4, 6-4.
In the third round, Berrettini produced one of the biggest
upsets of the competition as he thrashed the world number 21 Germany’s Alexander
Zverev in straight sets with a score of 6-3, 7-6, 7-6 on Saturday.
The Rome-born will now face world number one Spain’s Carlos
Alcaraz in the round of 16 clash on Monday.
