Former Britain’s number one player
Tim Henman has picked Germany’s Alexander
Zverev as the one to win the US Open 2024. The fourth and final Grand Slam of
the year has begun on Monday where players from all over the world are participating
to showcase their talent and secure the ultimate prize.
Former Britain’s number one Henman was recently quoted in a report by English media outlet Daily Express, who picked Zverev as one of the favourites to lift the title. The 49-year-old was of the opinion that the competition in men’s
tennis is really tough and numerous players can lift the title. He also predicted that the world number one,
Jannik Sinner, is unlikely to be amongst the winners in the competition as he is coming into the event with a lot of distractions.
"I didn’t pick Sinner because of his hip in
Cincinnati," said Henman. "We were right by the side of the court and
he looked really uncomfortable between so many points. When you think then
coming into a Grand Slam, best of five set matches, over two weeks. Seven
victories he’d need. I think it’s unlikely. Then you add into it that he’s
tested positive for an illegal substance and been through that whole process
which he’s been cleared of. That’s going to be a distraction and has been a
massive talking point within our sport. I think Zverev is a little bit
off-piste as a pick but I think he’s going to get one eventually."
Zverev has an impressive record while playing at the US Open where he
finished as the runner-up in the 2020 edition. He lost in the final to Austria’s
Dominic Thiem in a five-set thriller with a score of 2–6, 4–6, 6–4, 6–3, 7–6.
The 27-year-old started the 2024 edition with an impressive performance as well
as he booked his place in the second round after beating fellow countryman Maximilian
Marterer with a score of 6-2, 6-7, 6-3, 6-2.
