Alexander Zverev is perhaps lucky to even be at the 2024 Canadian Open where he will begin his campaign later today (Thursday 8 Aug). He faces Jordan Thompson but by his own admission has been battling a sickness bug.
Zverev said that he felt like he saw four balls coming towards him and that he felt dizzy after his Paris exit and that his Canadian Open preparation was in limbo as a result. But he will still face the Aussie later today.
He has previously won the title in Canada and will look to claim it for the second time in his career albeit with a sickness bug looming over him. It has not been the best period of Zverev's career. He suffered a knee injury at Wimbledon and had to wear a brace albeit he then went on to reach the final of the Hamburg Open losing to Arthur Fils.
But now he also faces the swift return to hard court action which by his own admission will be difficult and he does it also while being unwell. Not ideal at all.
“I’m a bit sick as you can hear but uh that’s okay, I took you know 3 days off now since Paris where I did absolutely nothing. I didn’t leave my apartment for 3 Days so that did me some good that really did me some good and helped me," said Zverev.
“The transition is never easy from surface to surface, especially the movement and finding the rhythm of the ball. I am someone who likes to hit a lot of tennis balls, so hopefully I can find it quicker than other players.
“Also, just the travelling time difference. A lot of things come into consideration. But I still have a few days and hopefully I will find my rhythm.”
