Lorenzo Musetti won his maiden trophy in Hamburg today by beating Carlos Alcaraz is a spectacular match that had everything.
The Italian will forever be remembered as the tennis player who defeated Alcaraz in a final for the first time as the Spaniard was unbeaten in finals before this one. It took a pretty spectacular effort from Musetti who had been playing superb tennis all week long. He could have kept in two but he won't be too upset about that after walking away with the trophy.
He said:
"I have no words because it was a roller-coaster until the end. I had so many match points. Carlos was so good on the match points, [I had] so many chances. But I think the key of the match was to keep calm and [have] all the patience [with] myself because it was really not easy. Carlos was putting so much effort in the match points when he was down, so it was not easy to find the energy to come back. But I cannot describe what I am feeling right now. I think I am still dreaming."
Musetti squandered five match points in the 2nd set and in was very upsetting to him. Speaking on that after the match:
"Of course I was really upset, but I tried to not show my opponent my reaction. I tried to forgive[ myself for] all the match points and all the points [when] I couldn't do it. I think that was the most [important] thing, even for me, because I didn't expect the win after all this roller-coaster, so I'm super happy to be here and to be the champion."
He finished off with:
"For me, for my team, for my family, for my friends and for the people who really love me, I appreciate all the sacrifices that my family [made] and all the hard work that I put in with my team. I will keep rolling for sure and I will continue like [this] hopefully."
