Carlos Alcaraz will resume his quest for his first trophy of the season at the upcoming Miami Open, after suffering a semifinal lose to eventual champion Jack Draper. However, retired American John Isner believes the Spaniard would have had increased his odds for a title had he competed at the doubles event in the desert.

The reigning Wimbledon champion appeared to be in great form during the Indian Wells tournament, as he failed to drop a set prior to his semifinal bout against Draper. However, the British star prevailed in a tight three-setter, overcoming a second set bagel to advance to his first ATP Masters final.

Fans would like to see top stars in doubles, says Isner

Although Alcaraz is not known for playing doubles, several fans would love to see him compete in that event. In the latest episode of their Nothing Major podcast, retired American pros John Isner and Steve Johnson pondered why Alcaraz and other top stars refrained from playing doubles.

“It is odd not to see top 10 guys play doubles,” began Johnson.

"I think it’s a bummer for the fans not to see Alcaraz playing doubles," responded Isner. "Like getting Carlos out there on the doubles court!”

"I am surprised Alcaraz isn’t playing, for some reason, I don’t know why," added Johnson. "He seems like a guy that would love to play doubles out here, that doesn’t make any sense to me."

In the past, tennis greats like Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal have played doubles at Indian Wells. However, it is yet to be seen if Alcaraz will follow the footsteps of the two tennis icons.
