Russian tennis prodigy Mirra Andreeva has taken the WTA by storm after capturing her second straight WTA 1000 trophy, and coach Conchita Martinez believes her ward could lift her first Grand Slam trophy sooner rather than later.

The 17-year old defeated World No.1 Aryna Sabalenka in an exciting three-set final on Sunday, rallying from a set down to secure the second WTA 1000 title of her career. Andreeva's dream run began after she won her maiden WTA 1000 title in Dubai two weeks ago, and she will look to make it a hat-trick of titles at the upcoming Miami Open.

Andreeva's ability to learn makes her even more dangerous, says Martinez

Following Andreeva's victory, Martinez was asked to elaborate on what made Andreeva such a unique player.

She's a sponge, she learns very quickly," said Martinez in an interview with L'Equipe. "If I tell her 'hit more as you go forward ,' she will absorb the information and apply it. Because she analyzes things very well. She is also a player with enormous self-confidence. And if she doubts, my role is precisely to make her stronger. What sets her apart above all is her mentality. She never gives up, she has this winning spirit, this desire to enter the court and refuse to lose. She is always certain that she can win."

When asked if Andreeva was ready to take the next step and win a Grand Slam title in 2025, the former-player-turned coach was full of confidence in the young Russian star.

"She's getting close, yes," admitted Martinez. "She has no limits. If she stays patient, doesn't rush things, keeps learning without rushing things to win a Grand Slam too quickly, and always remains clear-headed, she can become a great player and win several Grand Slams. But, as I keep telling her, you have to keep your feet on the ground. As long as I'm here, I don't want to see her get a big head; that would be a serious mistake."
