Nick Kyrgios revealed his strong desire to become a champion at Wimbledon and expressed confidence in his physical condition as he prepares to return to the ATP Tour.
The former world No. 13 made his professional debut in 2012 in the Australian Open qualifiers and reached the top 50 at just 19 years old, marking him as one of the players expected to lead the Tour.
Throughout his career, Kyrgios has been involved in various controversies due to his behavior both on and off the court, as well as his inconsistency in Tour performances. However, Kyrgios experienced a resurgence in 2022, having a remarkable year in which he won the Australian Open doubles title with Thanasi Kokkinakis and reached the Wimbledon singles final.
At SW19, he faced Novak Djokovic in the final, achieving his best Grand Slam performance. Kyrgios's impressive showing renewed his motivation to compete at the highest level, but an injury has kept him from participating in the Tour in 2023.
The Australian confirmed his return in 2024 and expressed his aspirations to win a Grand Slam, reflecting on the Wimbledon final where he lost 6-4, 3-6, 4-6, 6-7.
”'I want to just be able to say I won one grand slam, singles, before I retire,” he told Wide World of Sports.
“That's really driving me. I was so close, I was two sets away.”
"Wimbledon's the biggest tournament in the world ...It's just got that prestige. It's like the pinnacle of tennis to me. If you win Wimbledon, no one can kind of say anything to you, almost.”
"I still feel as if I'm in some of my physical prime and I have belief in my game," former world No. 13 added.
"I know what I'm able to do and I've got a lot of people around me that believe in my ability as well and I think that's super important. I'm just going to take it day by day and look to get back to where I was,” Kyrgios concluded.
