Nick Kyrgios's journey at
Wimbledon came to an end on Saturday when the Australian player retired from his match against Auger-Aliassime.
Kyrgios was playing very well against Auger-Aliassime who was all over the place committing too many mistakes. The Canadian lost the set 6-2 despite Kyrgios suffering an abdominal injury late in the first set. As time progressed the injury hampered Kyrgios more and Auger-Aliassime won the 2nd with 6-1. After that Nick retired.
At the post-match press conference Kyrgios was visibly upset because of the injury as he said:
“I was devastated, obviously. I’m enjoying myself. Going from the bad boy of tennis, all this stuff, to now one of the crowd favourites. I knew they wanted me to keep playing. I tried to give everything I absolutely could."
Kyrgios noticed the injury getting worse as he served and he realized that he will not be able to finish the match. He explained:
“I knew the more I served, the worse it was getting. It was heartbreaking for me. I told the crowd it was the end of the road. It
was a journey."
Kyrgios is gutted because of it because he was really enjoying himself on the court and he believes he could have done some damage:
“I honestly thought the way I was playing I could have done some pretty cool things this week. But it is what it is. It was tough to
leave that crowd, honestly.”
