Marcelo Rios was coaching tennis talent Jungcheng Shang and it was going well until the father stepped in to terminate the relationship.
Rios is a former number one who had a long and great career and recently he's been working with talent Shang on turning him into a great player. The relationship was a great one with Rios enjoying working his protege and the young Shang enjoying it as well.
However, the father of Shang did not seem too enthusiastic and he stepped in to terminate the relationship. It was much to Rios' disappointment:
"I wasn't given any reason why we ended up. They didn't tell me 'you don't like the way you dress'. Not a hollow. I learned this from my agent, who tells me 'bad news, you're not going to continue with Jerry'. I said 'ah, perfect'"
Rios is certain that the decision did not come from Shang itself but rather from his father as he explained in the interview:
"I think this was dad's decision. It wasn't Jerry's decision. I wasn't having a good time with the old man."
Rios also explained that the culuture differneces made it much harder to communicate properly:
"Communication with him was very bad, as he didn't talk much and every time I said to him, he would answer 'yes, yes, yes'. And what you want, when you have someone, is for them to tell you the things they want to train, what bothers them or what is not right for them."
