Novak Djokovic will play at the 2022 Australian Open after receiving a medical exemption and reactions have been mixed.
Djokovic fans around the world are thrilled with the news but many others were left questioning the validity of that medical exemption. After all, we are talking about one of the best athletes in the world who seems incredibly fit and healthy. What kind of possible ailment could he have in order to get an exemption. Obviously, Djokovic is not the only player who will play with the exemption but he is the one people know about.
Jamie Murray was asked about that and he gave a very honest response saying:
“I don’t know what to say about that really. I think if it was me that wasn’t vaccinated I wouldn’t be getting an exemption. But well done to him for getting clear to come to Australia and compete.”
Murray is clearly hinting at a possible double standard for Djokovic who is one of the best players tennis ever saw. Him missing the event would be a huge blow as Nick Kyrgios admitted a few days ago so there is a chance that Djokovic got an exemption based on less strict rules than those that would have applied for other plays.
Tennis Australia published a statement of their own explaining that the review process for the exemption was very rigorous indicating that Djokovic underwent a thorough check before being awarded one. What ultimately sealed the deal will probably never be known.
