Former world number one America’s
Jimmy Connors believes
that Spain’s
Carlos Alcaraz has the ability to at least win 15 Gran Slams in his
career.
The 20-year-old is now the talk of the town in the world of
tennis after beating Serbia’s Novak Djokovic to win Wimbledon 2023 in a
five-set thriller with a score of 1–6, 7–6(8–6), 6–1, 3–6, 6–4.
Connors, while talking on the
Advantage Connors podcast, stated
that Alcaraz has the ability to win at least 15 major titles in his career, but
for that, he has to continue working hard.
“If he [Alcaraz] plays 12 more years, that’s 48 Grand Slams,”
said the 70-year-old. “If he doesn’t get too full of himself, I’d say 15. That
is if he doesn't think he doesn't have to work hard & it'll come easy. He
needs to continue what he's doing & looks like he will.”
That victory in London was indeed a special one considering
before this year, Alcaraz’s best outing in the competition was reaching the
fourth round which he did last year.
By winning his second Grand Slam title, the current world
number one also stopped Djokovic’s march towards equaling former world number
one Switzerland’s Roger Federer’s record of eight Wimbledon titles.
The 36-year-old remains the joint second-most successful
player in the history of the competition, having won it seven times, joint with
legendary American tennis player Pete Sampras.
