Denmark’s tennis star
Holger Rune’s mother Aneke has stated that
her son decided to withdraw from the Open Sud De France because of a pre-decided
plan.
The 20-year-old had to retire in the semifinal of the
ongoing ATP 250 event against Borna Coric on Saturday. After the match, Rune posted
a message on his social media platform ‘Health First’ citing that his decision
was purely based on his recent fitness struggles.
Rune’s mother Anke was recently quoted in a report where she
stated that her son followed the plan which was in place after consultation with
the coaching staff who advised him to retire from the competition if he felt
further pain in his elbow.
"His elbow/forearm was already sore yesterday (Friday)
and the agreement was that if he felt it in the elbow in battle, and it did not
relieve by treating the muscle, he should stop,” he said. "There is some
irritation that clearly needs to be calmed down with some rest. Of course, you
have to take your body’s signals seriously."
The recent development
will be a setback for Rune who was coming into this event on the back of a
disappointing Australian Open where he was knocked out after losing in the
second round to Arthur Cazaux with a score of 7-6, 6-4, 4-6, 6-3.
