Serbia’s legendary tennis star
Novak Djokovic has been ousted
from the top spot in the UTR
rankings. The 36-year-old is regarded as the
greatest player in the history of men’s tennis in the Open era, having won as
many as 24 Grand Slam titles.
Djokovic had a rather disappointing out in the recently
concluded
Australian Open where he was knocked out after losing in the semifinal
to Italy’s
Jannik Sinner with a score of 6-1, 6-2, 6-7, 6-3.
After that defeat, Djokovic lost the top spot in the UTR
rankings as he has now been dropped to the second spot. He has been overtaken by Sinner
who is now at the top spot.
Previously, Djokovic has advocated in favour of UTR rankings
as he suggested that it is the best way to measure any player’s progress. “The UTR
Rating is the best way to measure yourself against all other players regardless
of their age or skill level,” he said back then.
However, on the positive side, the development in the UTR
rankings does not have any direct impact on the ATP ranking where he is still
ranked number one. It will be interesting to see whether he will be able to
keep hold of that position for a long time as he will not take part in any
tennis activities before the Indiana Wells.
