American tennis finally has depth — so why is the men's drought still alive?

Ben Shelton produced the run of his life to reach the final of the 2026 US Open but ultimately fell short right at the end. Another year has come and gone in which US men’s tennis has failed to produce a Grand Slam winning moment, extending the drought to 24 years. But why is that the case?

American tennis is starting to get a lot more depth, with a number of very talented players from the States starting to either make their way up the ATP rankings or solidify themselves among the elite.

They have three inside the top 10, six in the top 20, with 14 Americans residing in the top 100 of the ATP rankings. The cavalry is most certainly stacked with talent; it is the quality that is the main issue.

The ATP Tour has been dominated by two standout players these last couple of years: Carlos Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner. In a year in which they have struggled at times with injuries, the chance has seemingly come and gone to capitalise off this. Most significantly, at Grand Slam level with four months of patient waiting before they get another crack Down Under.

It has been 23 years since Andy Roddick lifted the US Open title, and American tennis is as strong as it has ever been since that day. The question still beckons: why have none of them made that next step?

While the drought prolongs, the signs are looking good. Shelton’s heroics in New York were closely followed by a whole nation desperate to celebrate the birth of a new major champion. The 23-year-old carried the burden but came up short.

It was not an easy run. Wins over Tallon Griekspoor, Hubert Hurkacz, Denis Shapovalov and Stefanos Tsitsipas were followed by a daunting prospect: taking on the reigning champion Alcaraz. The Spaniard may have been competing for the first time in over four months, but he was still looking threatening.

After going down a set, Shelton would drop just four games in the next two as he clawed his way ahead. The momentum was with him, but Alcaraz swiftly got back on level terms with a decider under the lights on the cards. 12 consecutive holds led to a blockbuster tiebreak finish. Shelton trailed at one point but would not give up, and at 3:33 in the morning, he prevailed against the seven-time Grand Slam champion.

Two things would occur from this win. The draw was now blown wide open, and an American would be in the final. The last time that occurred was Taylor Fritz back in 2024 when Sinner demolished him in straight sets. This time either Shelton or Frances Tiafoe would get that honour. Shelton stood up to the task in the semi-final with Alexander Zverev standing in his way. The hype around Shelton was rising and deserved. His talent seemed to be finally shining through, but the number one seed Alexander Zverev had different ideas.

What curtailed in the final is why American tennis has not been able to triumph on the big stage. As simple as it sounds, they have not been good enough. No Alcaraz or Sinner? Ok, Zverev comes in and succeeds. Maybe on another day Shelton plays the tennis he did against Alcaraz, and this discussion takes a different turn, but in this reality the German triumphs.

There are still loads of positives to take from this. The first Black American man to reach the US Open final since Arthur Ashe back in 1972. Still so young, Shelton has not reached his peak potential and will continue to grow as a player. His serve and forehand pose a threat to the greatest players on the planet, and the experience he would have gained from the "most fun 2 weeks of my life" is paramount to anymore success he may enjoy in the future.

When looking at the major and Masters 1000 contenders for each tournament, the obvious picks are Alcaraz, Sinner, Zverev and Novak Djokovic, all based on health of course. Shelton has a true argument to be on the cusp of this group, although just one win at Masters 1000 level outside of the Canadian Open title triumph makes for grim reading. Felix Auger-Aliassime, Alex de Minaur, Flavio Cobolli and Daniil Medvedev can also state their arguments with young talents Rafael Jodar and Arthur Fils also in contention.

Another two names regularly thrown into the hat are Fritz and Tiafoe. Once the higher-ranked and more esteemed tennis player, Fritz's CV may be better than Tiafoe but the current trajectory states differently.

The big-serving American has struggled with injuries this year, and at his absolute peak is trouble for the big boys. However, his form against Alcaraz, Sinner and Djokovic in recent times has been wretched. His two big chances at the US Open and ATP Finals came and went in 2024 without even picking up a set in those two contests. He will have to gather his thoughts and prepare for a resurgent campaign in 2027.

On the other hand, Tiafoe is in the form of his life. Up to a new career-high of eighth in the world after reaching the final of the Cincinati Open and semi-final of the US Open. A familiar story. This is what exactly happened in 2024. Whether a psychological problem or down to ability compared to his peers, Tiafoe has proven to be a brilliant tennis player on his day, relishing a battle on the big stage. Similar to Fritz, it is just getting over the line.

Maybe someone else a lot more fresh could make their stamp on the ATP Tour. At the age of 20, Learner Tien is just one deep run away from debuting in the top 10. A possible changing of the guard with Fritz sitting in that last position. It may be a stretch to put his name forward as a major champion now, but most certainly he will be here or thereabouts in the future. American tennis fans may need to be a bit patient with Tien.

They are the main competitors, but there are more waiting in the wings. Tommy Paul reached back-to-back major quarter-finals last year and reached a career high ranking of eighth. Injuries have prevented him from kicking on. A very capable tennis player, his straight set loss to Alcaraz in the fourth round at Flushing Meadows proves that he is not quite there. Alex Michelsen is another one for the future, still being only 22. Brandon Nakashima's incredible run at the Canadian Open and Cincinnati Open failed to be translated into success at the US Open but is a good sign. The question is whether he can continue this upward trend.

All the prior names are very capable tennis players who on their day can cause a whole lot of damage. In truth, American tennis is in a very stable condition. Shelton is the one out in front contesting for the big awards while the others try to catch up.

The problem is that the benchmark is so high. Alcaraz and Sinner have taken tennis to a different stratosphere in terms of quality. The level they have showcased again and again has been mesmerising, especially at Grand Slam level. Since 2024, one of those two has been the winner of each major event they have both participated in.

The only two from those 12 examples not to be swept up were the French Open and US Open. This seemed like a great chance, but ultimately they were not opportunistic enough as Zverev stole a march.

For the leading contenders, they do not need to be able to beat Alcaraz and Sinner every time. While the two are remarkably consistent and the favourites every time they step out onto the court, they are susceptible to a bad day – take Sinner at Roland Garros. Shelton did buckle this trend with the performance of his life against Alcaraz in the last eight of the US Open but was unable to keep that level up.

These players are not fools. They know better than anyone that Roddick's 2003 triumph was the last time American men tasted gold on the major stage. This will be going around their minds every time they step onto the court and constantly reminded to them as well by the media and fans. They are humans. The psychological toll it could take may block their pathway to the finish line entirely as the pressure mounts. Some players can stomach it at the very highest level; other cannot and the weak get chewed up and spat out on the ATP Tour.

Shelton will need to show his true minerals for the rest of 2026 and beyond. As aforementioned, his development is nowhere near done. Lessons have been learnt from his maiden major final. That is normal. Next time he reaches this stage, it could most certainly be different.

In conclusion, American tennis will always have higher expectations than other countries. Being so vast and populated, talent is never far away. While golden generations of tennis have come and gone, it is always so hard for them to break the barrier and be listed among the elite.

Players get four shots at major glory a year, and only one can stand on top, making tennis a truly brutal sport at times. Momentum and confidence are everything, and the longer this drought goes on for, the harsh reality will dawn even further on these American representatives.

In a few years, some unknown talent currently working their way up could be a Grand Slam champion and break this cycle. Maybe one of Shelton, Fritz or Tiafoe will finally live up to the expectation. At the end of the day, this drought grows longer as the competition around them grows stronger.

From the 'Big Three' to Alcaraz and Sinner, the Europeans have dominated tennis in recent times. Juan Martin del Potro was the last male Grand Slam winner not to reside from that continent, triumphing in the 2009 US Open against Roger Federer.

As for the rising depth, that does not curtail a superstar. Development in tennis has not been at the level compared to other sports in that part of the world, and that is the area needed to be improved. American tennis cannot keep going through this cycle of mediocre eras. Between the 2009 US Open and 2024 Wimbledon, Americans were seldom seen in Grand Slam finals. Fritz and Shelton have since done their best to battle for glory, but their efforts have fallen short.

Once they conjure up a way of creating one of these players into a superstar, then Grand Slam success will continue to be out of their reach. The depth is there. The quality is not.
