Russia ace Daniil Medvedev shared his thoughts on the Novak Djokovic situation ahead of the Australian Open during a presser.
Expectedly, the world number two could be the biggest gainer of Djokovic not playing at the Australian Open. The Russian is by many considered the 2nd most likely player to win the event considering his results at the event and his run to the finals last year. If Djokovic does not play, Medvedev becomes the first favourite to win it. Asked about ti, Medvedev said:
"I want to say about Novak’s situation that we’re in Australia, it’s their rules. But from what I know, again, if he has a valid exemption to be in this country and to do what he wants, then he should play."
Medvedev also argued the other side:
"I want to say about Novak’s situation that we’re in Australia, it’s their rules. But from what I know, again, if he has a valid exemption to be in this country and to do what he wants, then he should play."
It's a classic Medvedev response where he tries to see both sides but ultimately sides with neither. The Russian is well aware of how significant Djokovic's deportation would be for the outcome of the event. He admitted to being extremely curious about the topic saying:
"I know yesterday the Prime Minister [Scott Morrison], let’s say, said no. I didn’t really read anywhere why. That’s what interests me to know, the reason. Is it just he said, 'I don’t want [Djokovic in the country]'? Is there a real legal reason behind this?"
Whatever happens, if Djokovic gets deported, many will be relieved, Medvedev most likely among them.
