With the 2024 ATP season less than two weeks away, Paul Annacone, former coach of Roger Federer, believes Novak Djokovic and Carlos Alcaraz will continue their stranglehold on Grand Slams next year.
Djokovic and Alcaraz won all four of the Grand Slams in 2023, with Alcaraz winning Wimbledon while Djokovic triumphed at the other three Majors. Annacone claims the duo are heads above the rest of the field, and will likely continue their dominance at Grand Slams in 2024.
"In my personal opinion right now over the 12 months span, I think Novak and [Carlos] are a little better than everybody. Little better, not a lot,” Annacone said on the Rock n Roll Tennis podcast. "Does that mean they are going to win every single tournament? No. But I would lean towards them in the Majors – in three out of five set."
The American coach singled out World No.3 Daniil Medvedev as a player who could pose problems to the top two players in the world. However, Annacone pointed out that players below the top 3 in rankings still had room to develop before they could challenge the three best players in the world.
"After Alcaraz I think there’s Medvedev – [he’s] the next one," added Annacone. "He’s right there on the heels. He’s close. After Medvedev, I think there’s probably 10 names. A lot of those are young names that are still developing. So where will they get to and how will they present themselves in the Majors? That’s why it’s sports, right? We’ve yet to see that. I’ll be shocked if there’s a dominant other person."
