Alexander Zverev lost to
Daniil Medvedev at the
Rome Open and he admitted after the match that's hes a long way away from his form last year.
The ankle injury last year proved very costly for Alexander Zverev but at least he's competing. It was a horrific injury that could have been much worse but luckily he was able to come back and is playing okay tennis. He's not playing the best he can play but that's somewhat expected. He even admits it himself, it's nowhere near where he was last year at this time:
“I’m 1000km away. I just don’t win, but that’s missing. I don’t feel
like saying anything. I’m out earlier than I had hoped. I have to win and then that will solve [a lot of problems]. I don’t know what to say anymore. At the moment this year I’m probably playing the worst tennis since 2015, 2016.”
He's going to have to work hard because he's not even ranked that well anymore and an even bigger drop is looking likely if he doesn't fix things until Paris. He might drop out of the top 50 if he crashes out early from Paris. A very crucial grand slam is coming up from Zverev, one that could determine the course of the season.
