For the first time in four years, Alexander Zverev won a match in Miami and it came in a closely contested affair against Borna Coric.
The Croatian dealt a confidence blow to Zverev with a stunning 2nd set display but Zverev rallied behind his serve to take control of the match in the 3rd set. It was something that the German underlined as a crucial after the match saying:
"It was a very close game on my serve at 0-0. I was down 15/30 and I played very aggressive points and I thought, 'I lost the last few matches not going for my shots. I’m going to do that today', and it worked out well.”
It was a well-fought match from Coric who was only playing his 2nd event after a year-long absence due to a shoulder injury. Despite the lack of match fitness and form, Zverev had a tough time because he sees Coric as a very tough matchup for himself:
"Borna, for me personally, is a very tough opponent. I’m happy with how things went and looking forward to the next match as well.”
