Taylor Fritz secured a straightforward victory over surprise contender Adam Walton (No. 89) with a 6-3, 7-5 win, advancing to the Miami Open quarter-finals.

The World No. 4 reaches this stage in Miami for the second time and will face Matteo Berrettini for a spot in the semi-finals.

Taylor Fritz off to a flying start

The match quickly tilted in favour of the American, who earned an early break, winning 12 of the first 16 points and dominating the game. As usual, Fritz was nearly untouchable on serve, winning 87% of his first-serve points and 70% on his second serve.

While Walton managed to steady himself when holding serve, he never posed a real threat to Fritz’s deliveries. At 1-4, Walton saved a couple of break points to keep pace, but it wasn’t enough to stop the local favourite from taking the set 6-3.

Fritz holds his nerve in tight second set

Walton entered the second set with conviction, earning an early break that boosted his confidence. However, the Australian struggled with his first serve, and Fritz capitalised on his opportunities to break back. From there, the set turned into a tense battle, with both players saving break points.

At 3-3, Walton fought through a tough service game, facing four break points in an 18-point game. Soon after, Fritz showed his composure, overcoming a 15-40 deficit to stay level. Ultimately, the American’s experience shone through in the crucial moments as the set reached 5-5.

Walton handed Fritz one last break opportunity, and this time, the World No. 4 seized it. Fritz then held his serve to seal the victory 6-3, 7-5 in one hour and 35 minutes. In the quarter-finals, he’ll take on former Wimbledon runner-up Matteo Berrettini, who recently defeated Alex De Minaur in straight sets.
