Kei
Nishikori withdrew from the DC Open just before his match against Lloyd Harris,
following a strong performance at the Atlanta Open last week.
The
Japanese tennis player, Kei Nishikori, was scheduled to play his first-round
match against South African Lloyd Harris at the ATP 500 in Washington.
Unfortunately, just minutes before the match, the former US Open finalist from
2014 announced his withdrawal from the tournament due to a physical issue.
Given the
situation, it is possible that Nishikori made the decision to withdraw as a
preventive measure for the upcoming tournaments in Toronto, Cincinnati, and New
York. His participation in the two ATP Masters 1000 events and the last Grand
Slam of the season now seems very uncertain.
Nishikori
recently returned to the ATP Tour after competing in Challengers and had a
notable victory in the first round of the Atlanta tournament, where he defeated
Jordan Thompson in an exciting match with double 7-6 sets.
However,
the journey has not been easy for the Japanese player, as he faced significant
challenges during his rehabilitation process after undergoing hip surgery.
Recently,
the former world No. 4 expressed his desire to compete against the best young
players on the ATP tour, which is why he fought hard for his recovery despite
being 33 years old.
"One
thing I hope is to have the chance to play against these great young players
like Alcaraz, Rune and Sinner at some point. This is part of my motivation to
try and play for a few more years."
"I don't
think we've ever seen anyone like Alcaraz before. He looks like Rafa but he has
more speed. Good defense, amazing forehand and he has a good backhand too,” Nishikor added.
The Japanese player had also commented two months ago that he took great inspiration from former world No. 1 Andy Murray, who, despite undergoing two hip surgeries, came back to compete at the highest level due to his love for tennis.
