American tennis stars
Ben Shelton and
Frances Tiafoe will not be representing their country at this summer's
Olympic Games in Paris, and Team USA captain
Bob Bryan fully supports their decision.
The 2024 Olympic Games will be hosted in Paris, France with the tennis event taking place on the prestigious clay courts of Roland Garros and commencing on July 27, 2024. Players who are participating at the event will be forced to make the transition from grass to clay, and then quickly back to hard court as the road to the
US Open kicks off soon after.
Shelton and Tiafoe have Flushing Meadows in their sights
The American duo opted to skip this summer's Olympics, instead choosing to focus on rest and preparation for the North American hard court events leading up to the US Open at the end of August. US Olympic Team captain and former doubles World No.1 Bob Bryan stated the aforementioned players have the full support of himself and the USTA, although he added they would be missing out on a memorable experience.
I’m not shocked by any decisions by the players," said Bryan in an interview with Tennis.com. "Everyone’s got their personal journey and individual goals for the season. And going from hard to clay to grass to clay to hard is challenging for anyone.
“If your goal is to peak at the US Open, it might not be the most ideal situation for you. So I support and am behind Ben and Frances, and I understand where they are coming from. But for those guys that are going, I think they are going to have a wonderful time."
