Serbia’s legendary tennis star
Novak Djokovic has expressed
excitement about playing alongside Australia’s
Nick Kyrgios. The two are set to
team up and play in the doubles category in the
Brisbane International. The
mega-event is set to begin from Sunday where some top players will feature in
different categories.
Former world number one Djokovic was recently featured in a video on Eurosport’s official website where he talked about playing alongside former world number 13. The 37-year-old, who is regarded as the greatest player
in the history of men’s tennis in the singles category in the Open era, having
won as many as 24 Grand Slam titles, revealed that the two discussed playing together during Wimbledon earlier this year and expressed optimism that
it will be ‘fun’ to take part in the event.
“Its going to be fun,” he said. “We have never teamed up so
let’s see. We texted about it. We spoke earlier at Wimbledon about playing together
whenever he is ready to come back so we get the first chance of right away in
the first week of the season, so it should be fun.”
Kyrgios is set to return to the court after a gap of more
than two years. The former world number 13 has remained out of action for more
than 24 months because of fitness concerns. During that time, he missed eight
Grand Slams. Kyrgios and Djokovic will feature in singles and doubles at the event. In the singles category, the Australian tennis star,
who was once regarded as the best talent in men’s tennis in his country,
will face France’s Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard in the round of 32 clash. On the
other hand, Djokovic will face Australia’s Rinky Hijikata in the opening round
of the competition. In the doubles category, the pair of Djokovic and Kyrgios will
go up against Austria’s
Alexander Erler and Germany’s Andreas Mies.
