Serbia’s legendary tennis star
Novak Djokovic has revealed
the primary reason behind hiring former world number one
Andy Murray as his
coach for the 2025 season. The 37-year-old is already regarded as the greatest
player in the history of men’s tennis in the singles category in the Open era,
having won as many as 24 Grand Slam titles.
Djokovic has recently participated in an interesting campaign. For the first time in seven years, the Belgrade-born star failed to win a
single Grand Slam in a season. Not only that, but he also failed any ATP event in the 2024 season as well. It was because of this that Djokovic decided to hire
former world number one Murray as his new coach.
The decision was a surprising one as the 37-year-old, who is
often regarded as the greatest British player in the history of men’s tennis
after winning three Grand Slams and two gold Olympic gold medals, recently
retired from the sport in 2024 after taking part in the Paris Olympics where he
featured in the doubles category with Dan Evans.
Djokovic has been recently quoted in a report where he
talked about the reasons behind hiring his former rival. The former world
number one was of the opinion that hiring Murray was a strategic decision as he
is still looking to win more Grand Slams in the near future. The 24-time Grand
Slam winner also stated that he feels his body is doing well and that he feels
ready enough to ‘keep going’.
“I still will try to go strong because I feel like my body
is serving me well,” he said. “I still have motivation to win Grand Slams, make
more history. That’s one of the biggest reasons why I asked Andy to work with
me, because I still have big plans, so as long as that’s the case, I will keep
going.”
