Daniil Medvedev did a first in his career by coming back from being 0-2 down against Cilic and winning in the
Wimbledon 3rd round.
The match was a great one that saw Cilic dominate play early in the match and taking a 2-0 lead before losing his magical touch in the next three. It was a first for Medvedev as he never came back from being 0-2 down to win a match and after doing so he said:
“It was an unbelievable match. I think tennis fans always enjoy watching players come back from two-sets-to-love down and for it to be five sets. I certainly do so when
I watch tennis on the TV. It’s my first comeback [from 0-2 sets down],
and actually what’s amazing is against Goffin at Wimbledon in 2019, I was two-sets-to-love down and I had a break in the fifth set, but I lost. So when I left the court after the fourth set today, I
told myself, ‘It’s not going to be another one of those"
Medvedev was not very happy with his level early on in the match which was visible from his body language but after Cilic started dropping off a cliff in the 3rd and 4th set Medvedev found confidence. Even so, there was some doubt late in the match as he explained:
“So I’m really happy. When I was 5-0, 40/0 up at the end and Marin came back to 2-5, I thought to myself, ‘Again..!’ Marin is an amazing player and for the first two sets he basically destroyed me.”
The Russian will face Hubert Hurkacz next who is a similar opponent to CIlic with many of the same strenghts so the Russian will need to be careful not to dig himself into a hole once more.
