The 40-year old did not expect to play this match but with Alcaraz and Bautista Agut unable to go, Lopez got the nod from the Spanish Team Captain to play their first match and he delivered. The opponent was Quiroz and Lopez proved too experienced for the Ecuadorian winning the match in two sets and giving Spain the first point.
It was a crucial point that allowed Spain to win the tie overall in front of their fans in Madrid. Lopez was thrilled with the win saying after the match:
"A 40-year-old player playing professional tennis is not very normal. I have had a lot of luck and few injuries.
“I have taken care of myself a lot, my type of game may help, I do not play very long points."
Lopez was supposed to play for Spain but his role was mainly in the doubles:
"It is a gift of life to be here representing Spain. I did not expect to play this game. My role was the doubles I thought and after everything that happened I have done my best."
He finished off with:
"You put everything into each training session. It is a good tennis week and it is going well. These weeks serve me a lot, I am in shape. Physically, I can do whatever the team needs”
