Alexander Zverev played in the Madrid Open final last year and he's hoping for a great run this year as well in order to get back to where he was.
Zverev was playing one of the best clay tennis last year and after beating Alcaraz at Roland Garros, the German looked like a good candidate to win the event. Ultimately a horrific ankle injury completely derailed his season but he knows that he can get back there if he works really hard. He's been doing that and hopefully, Madrid, which has been a great event for him historically will see him elevate his play even more:
"[Previous big wins] make me realize that if I get back to 100%, that's where I can be. It's all about me getting back. I know the player that I was and I know that I can get back there. How long will it take me? That is up to me, that is up to god, in a way. We'll see how it goes."
One of the things that Zverev needs to get back to is winning close matches. He was really good against Medvedev in Monte-Carlo but threw away the match:
"Some weeks, I feel so close, I feel like I can win a tournament again. Some weeks, like in Indian Wells, I feel like if I can get past that Medvedev match, I can end up in the final against [Carlos] Alcaraz. In Monte Carlo, the same thing. There are always weeks like Miami, where I get a little bit injured, and in Munich, where I don't play my best tennis. And you feel like you are so far away."
