Former British number one
Tim Henman believes that Spain’s
Carlos Alcaraz is not going through a ‘crisis’ situation. The 21-year-old is
already regarded as one of the best players currently playing in men’s tennis
in the singles category, along with the likes of Italy’s Jannik Sinner.
Alcaraz has been going through a difficult phase. The
reigning world number three most recently played in the Miami Open, where he
was knocked out after losing in round 64 to Belgium’s David Goffin with a score
of 5-7, 6-4, 6-3. It was the third consecutive event in which the young
Spaniard did not manage to go all the way and secure the title. Those results
were a serious blow for Alcaraz in his pursuit of becoming the world number one,
especially after it was announced that the reigning world number one Sinner is
going to stay away from tennis for as long as three months after agreeing a
deal with the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) for failing two dope tests in
March last year.
British former number one Heman has recently been quoted in
a report by
TNT Sports where he disagreed with the notion that Alcaraz is not
going through a ‘crisis’ situation. However, the 50-year-old was of the opinion
that the four-time Grand Slam winner needs to improve on his shot selection
which is costing him important moments.
"I definitely don't see it as a moment of crisis,"
said Henman. "He's not playing his best tennis, but it's all part of the
journey of learning and understanding yourself. For me, shot selection is still
an area that he can improve on. I think when he improves his shot selection,
then he will become more consistent. And he's one of the best players in the
world. So I think he's capable of winning any tournament that he enters."
