The Spaniard arrived in Tokyo after capturing a title at the Hamburg European Open. The win at the ATP 500 event was the biggest trophy of his career but now he added another great achievement. While not a trophy the Bronze Medal won against Novak Djokovic in Tokyo was a significant moment for him as he said after the match:
“It’s a bronze medal, but for me, it’s like gold. I haven’t won the tournament, but it’s the best title of my career. I think this is my biggest achievement. It’s incredible. After yesterday’s loss, I felt people’s love & support & I had to give my all. I’ve been able to overcome losing 2nd set thanks to all the support. It’s just bronze but I gave my all.”
