Serbia’s legendary tennis star
Novak Djokovic has gives update
about his eye infection ahead of the Monte Carlo Master. The ATP 1000 event began
on Sunday where some of the best players in the world will participate to
showcase their talent and secure the ultimate prize.
Former world number one Djokovic, who is regarded as the greatest
player in the history of men’s tennis in the singles category in the Open era,
having won as many as 24 Grand Slam titles, was one of the pre-tournament
favourites to lift the title after his heroics in the recently concluded Miami
Open.
The 37-year-old finished as the runner-up after losing to the
Czech Republic’s Jakub Mensik in the final in straight sets with a score of
7-6, 7-6. During the final, Djokovic was seen playing with a swollen right eye. The Belgrade-born star has been recently quoted in a report by France 24, where he gave details about his recovery from the eye infection. Djokovic also
admitted that his ‘expectations’ are not that high in the competition where he
last lifted the title back in 2015.
"I'm glad that I found at least in Miami that joy on
the court and, I feel, performance level," he said. "Let's see if I
can carry that into clay. It's obviously a completely different surface and I
didn't have much time to get used to this tournament, so my expectations are
not really high for the results here. It's more about trying to get matches and
as many as possible, and obviously try to peak towards the end of the clay
season which is, of course, most importantly in Paris. It started in
semi-finals day in Miami and I did struggle with it in the finals but it's
calming down, I guess. I'm visiting the doctor later today so let's see. It
should be okay."
