Alexander Bublik shocked Alexander Zverev in the Montpellier final winning in straight sets and capturing his maiden trophy in his 5th attempt.
The victory is one of the biggest if not the biggest victories of his career as he not only defeated a top 10 player but also one of the best players in the world. The 24-year-old implemented his dynamic game on Zverev from the start as he combined brutal ball striking with deft touches to capture the first Top 5 win of his career after 70 minutes in Montpellier.
After the win he said:
“I played four finals before and [in] the fifth final I have won against a great player against Sascha. It is great. All my game together. I was serving well and returned well and kept my nerve. I was lucky in the moments and when I had my chances I used them.”
For Bublik the victory continues a rather great start to the season that has seen him win matches against some great players so far. He is set o improve his ranking as well after a breakout season in 2021. FOr Zverev it's a disappointing result but he will continue the pursuit of his 20th ATP tour title.
