Former world number one Garbine Muguruza believes that her
fellow countryman and legendary tennis star Rafael Nadal has done enough to enjoy
his retirement life. The 38-year-old is regarded as one of the greatest players
in the history of men’s tennis in the singles category, having won as many as 22
Grand Slam titles.
Nadal has struggled with fitness concerns in the recent
past. It was because of this reason he was forced to miss three out of four Grand
Slams in 2023. During his time off the court, he announced that the 2024 season
would be his last at the highest level. Nadal returned to the court earlier
this year but has continued to struggle with more fitness concerns.
Once again, he has missed three out of four Grand Slams this
season. The former world number one previously announced that he would take part in the upcoming Laver Cup, but on Thursday, the Spaniard revealed
that he will not be taking part in the competition, once again citing that he is not fit to be a part of the tournament.
"I’m really disappointed to share that I won’t be able
to compete at the Laver Cup in Berlin next week," he said in a statement.
"This is a team competition and to really support Team Europe, I need to
do what’s best for them and at this moment there are other players who can help
the team deliver the win."
Former world number one Spain’s Muguruza was recently quoted
in a report where she thought that Nadal has done enough to go and enjoy
his post-retirement life. "He’s so ready," she said. "His body,
his mind, just everything... It’s time to also enjoy his kid! I see him smiling
all the time with his baby. I’m like, ‘Why are you on the court still? Go home,
take the boat, go in Mallorca.’ I think he gave everything he had.”
