"There are other players who can help the team secure a win": Rafael Nadal withdraws from Laver Cup

Rafael Nadal has announced his withdrawal from the Laver Cup, becoming the third player to pull out just a week before the tournament starts. The 22-time Grand Slam champion had accepted the invitation months ago for the tournament in Berlin but announced that he’s not 100% physically fit.

After the Olympic Games, Nadal was expected to return to the court at the upcoming Laver Cup, scheduled from September 20 to 22, marking his first appearance since Roger Federer’s retirement. The Spaniard teamed up with the Swiss star in doubles during the 2022 Laver Cup, which was Federer’s final match.

“I’m really disappointed to share that I won’t be able to compete at the Laver Cup in Berlin next week. This is a team competition, and to truly support Team Europe, I need to do what’s best for them, and right now, there are other players who can help the team secure a win,” wrote Nadal.

“I have so many great, emotional memories from playing the Laver Cup, and I was really looking forward to being with my teammates and with Bjorn in his final year as Captain. I wish Team Europe the very best of luck and will be cheering them on from afar.”

Following Nadal's withdrawal from Team Europe, a replacement is expected to be announced soon. He joins two other withdrawals from Team World on the same day: Tommy Paul and Alex de Minaur, who pulled out due to injuries and will be replaced by Thanasi Kokkinakis and Francisco Cerundolo.
