Switzerland’s tennis star
Stan Wawrinka has expressed his
desire to win one more trophy before retiring from the sport.
The 38-year-old is slowly but surely marching towards the
end of his career which has already lasted more than two decades.
Wawrinka was quoted in a report where he expressed his desire
to go on a high and win another title before calling it quits.
"Yeah, it’s like you said, it’s because I care so much.
That’s also why sometimes you get nervous, why sometimes you cry after losing a
final,” he said. “But it was a really positive week. I was enjoying myself
there like always, lot of support, big fans there. I was playing well, I was
playing good tennis and of course when you get into the final, you want to win
the final.
"If I have one goal, it’s to win one more trophy before
I retire. Of course, it means a lot that final. I was that close. I know I
missed a stupid backhand on break point in the first set. But after, everything
is fine, everything is still going in the right direction, playing much better
so I’m happy to be here. I’m happy to be in Mason, Ohio and hopefully I can
play a big match tomorrow.”
Many believe that the Lausanne-born remains one of the most
underrated players in the current era dominated by the likes of Roger Federer,
Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic.
Wawrinka, despite struggling with fitness concerns, has won
three out of the four major titles in his career.
The only Grand Slam where he never lifted the title is
Wimbledon where his best outing to date is playing in the quarterfinal.
Wawrinka is currently taking part in the Cincinnati Open
(Western & Southern Open) where he defeated America’s Brandon Nakashima in
the round of 64 with a score of 6-3, 6-7, 6-3 on Monday. He is now set to face
Americas’ Frances Tiafoe in the second-round fixture on Wednesday.
