Australia’s tennis star
Nick Kyrgios has revealed that he
has faced racism but stated that he ‘don’t really care’.
The 28-year-old is currently spending time on the sidelines as
he continue to recover from fitness concerns.
Kyrgios revealed that he faced racial comments in his career
and stated that he feels he is more accepted by people of color.
“I’ve dealt with a fair bit of that [racism] in my career,
for sure,” he said. “Like people screaming out racist comments. I’ve copped
that a couple of times. But I don’t care. A lot of my friends back home are
coloured and I almost always fit into that culture a bit better, to be honest.
"I
feel more accepted. I’ve dealt with a fair bit of it. Australia’s pretty bad
with that type of stuff anyway, but I don’t really care.”
Kyrgios will be hoping that his time off from the court will
help him regain his form as well, especially after getting injured at a time
when he was going through the best time in his career.
In 2022, the former
world number 13 played in his maiden Grand Slam final when he lost to the
current world number one Serbia’s Novak Djokovic with a score of 4–6, 6–3, 6–4, 7–6(7–3).
