Day nine delivered another major shake-up in the women's draw, with Qinwen Zheng stunning Iga Swiatek after another remarkable comeback, while Elena Rybakina continued her dominant run by powering past former champion Naomi Osaka. Mirra Andreeva also fought back from a set down against Anastasia Potapova, while Coco Gauff advanced in straight sets against fellow American Iva Jovic.

The results set up a blockbuster quarterfinal between Zheng and Rybakina, with the Kazakh now just one win away from becoming world No. 1. Zheng, meanwhile, reached the last eight after coming through qualifying and overcoming 0-5 deficits in consecutive rounds. Andreeva and Gauff will also meet in the quarterfinals as the American continues her title defense in New York.

Zheng produced another extraordinary comeback in New York to eliminate Swiatek and reach the US Open quarterfinals. The Chinese qualifier looked completely out of the contest when Swiatek raced into a 5-0 lead, but once again refused to panic. Zheng gradually found more depth and consistency from the baseline, while Swiatek began to lose the control she had established at the start.

The comeback was particularly remarkable given that it came only two days after Zheng had also recovered from 0-5 in the deciding set against Madison Keys.

What followed was one of the most remarkable stretches of the tournament so far. Zheng won seven consecutive games to completely erase the 5-0 deficit and take the opening set 7-5, turning the match on its head. Her serving numbers were far from perfect, with only 41% of first serves finding the court, but she compensated brilliantly in the most important moments. Zheng converted five of 13 break-point opportunities, while Swiatek managed only two breaks from seven chances.

Swiatek was unable to produce a response in the second set as Zheng maintained her intensity and continued to win the crucial exchanges. The Chinese player eventually closed out a 6-3 victory to reach the quarterfinals after coming through qualifying, with her live ranking now climbing to around No. 52 after an extraordinary run that has already included seven consecutive wins in New York. She will now face Rybakina in another major test.

Rybakina continued her commanding US Open campaign with a dominant straight-sets victory over Osaka, immediately establishing the difference in power between the two Grand Slam champions. The second seed controlled the opening exchanges with her serve and heavy groundstrokes, while Osaka struggled to find the level of aggression that had carried her through the earlier rounds.

Rybakina raced through the opening set 6-1, with Osaka winning only 43% of her first-serve points compared with 68% for her opponent. The Japanese star also produced just three winners in the set, while Rybakina had 11.

Osaka made the second set more competitive, but Rybakina remained in control of the important points. The Kazakh continued to take the ball early and redirect Osaka's pace, while the four-time Grand Slam champion was unable to create a single break-point opportunity against the second seed.

The 27-year-old eventually found the decisive break midway through the set and closed out the victory 6-4. Osaka's movement was also affected by the Achilles issue that had bothered her during the match, making Rybakina's ability to maintain pressure even more decisive.

The statistics underlined Rybakina's superiority throughout the match, with the second seed finishing with 18 winners compared with just six for Osaka. It was an unusually low attacking output for the Japanese star, whose game is normally built around aggressive baseline tennis. Rybakina now moves into the quarterfinals without dropping a set and will face Zheng, knowing that victory would also take her to the top of the WTA rankings for the first time.

Andreeva had to fight back from a set down against Potapova to reach the US Open quarterfinals for the first time. The fifth seed struggled to impose herself during the opening set as Potapova made the most of her opportunities and edged ahead 7-5. Andreeva then raised her level in the second, becoming more consistent in the longer rallies and doing a better job of controlling the tempo from the baseline.

The French Open champion eventually forced a deciding set with a 6-4 second set and carried the momentum into the decider. Potapova continued to fight, but Andreeva gradually established the upper hand and pulled away to take the final set 6-3. The result gives Andreeva her first US Open quarterfinal and keeps alive her hopes of becoming the first woman since Swiatek in 2022 to win the French Open and US Open in the same season.

The match ended on a difficult note, however, as Potapova suffered an apparent left knee injury in the final game. She received treatment and managed to finish the match, but was visibly emotional afterward. Andreeva immediately crossed the court to embrace and console her opponent, producing one of the more touching moments of the day.

Gauff continued her US Open title bid with another straight-sets victory, overcoming fellow American Jovic to reach the quarterfinals. The fourth seed immediately took control of the match, putting pressure on Jovic from the baseline and making the most of the teenager's limited time to recover after her three-hour battle with Alexandra Eala in the previous round.

Jovic offered more resistance in the second set and managed to stay closer to Gauff in the rallies, but the 2023 champion remained composed whenever the pressure increased. Gauff continued to dictate with her forehand and used her serve effectively to prevent Jovic from building sustained momentum, eventually closing out the 6-4 set.

The victory sends Gauff into the quarterfinals for the third consecutive year at the US Open and sets up another intriguing clash with Andreeva. The American will now face the reigning French Open champion for a place in the semifinals, continuing her pursuit of a second Grand Slam title in New York.
