Carlos Alcaraz has f`allen flat in his route to Wimbledon with a lesson at the hands of rising British star, Jack Draper who won Stuttgart last week and is finally showing the promise that he had before getting injured over recent years.
Alcaraz who is defending champion was eliminated in the round of 16 of the Cinch Championships (7-6/6-3) losing some confidence for Wimbledon, although after winning at Roland Garros the concern is relative.
This defeat drops the Spaniard to No. 3 in the world. If Novak Djokovic were to end up playing Wimbledon it would put him in a worse position for the draw.
The start of the match was very even, with both players being very serious with their serves and not giving any break option against. The British player was very confident after winning several consecutive matches. Thus, the first was decided in a tie-break.
In the sudden death, Draper was brutal. He gave no options to Carlitos and ended up closing it by 7-3 to take the first set. Great first set from the British ace serving very well despite having only a 58% success in first. Alcaraz played very seriously in the set, but in the tiebreak he played at the pace that his rival wanted to play and fell apart.
Alcaraz tried to hit back in the second. But this was to no avail. Draper had his first break point of the match at 3-2 that he did not waste. The serve was being the key, Alcaraz missed at the key moment and in a flash he was down 5-2 in the second set.
In the next game a sensational Draper was 15-40 and had put fear of god into Carlitos who, at least, showed heart at that moment of the match and forced it to 5-3 in the second set. Draper did not fail with his serve and closed the match.
Watch out for Draper at Wimbledon, he can be a very dangerous player.
