America’s young tennis star Coco Gauff had a hilarious reaction during a post-match interview after securing a much-needed win over Ekaterina Alexandrova. The 20-year-old is often regarded as one of the most highly-rated young players currently playing women’s tennis in the singles category.
Gauff is currently taking part in the Berlin Ladies Open where she booked her place in the quarterfinal after beating Alexandrova in the round of 16 in straight sets with a score of 7-6, 6-2 on Thursday. The win was a sweet revenge for the reigning world number two as she was defeated by the same player in the same competition in 2023 in the second-round in straight sets with a score of 6-4, 6-0.
Gauff was asked after the match whether last year’s result was on her mind during the contest, and she responded in a hilarious manner. “I played her here last year?” she asked. In response to that, the host stated, “Yeah, and you lost.” Gauff was quick to suggest that she could not recall anything like that by stating, “Oh, I don’t remember.”
Gauff will be hoping to go all the way to get her preparation correct for the upcoming third Grand Slam of the year. Wimbledon 2024 will begin on July 1, and players from all over the world will participate to secure the ultimate prize.
The Atlanta-born star came into this competition on the back of an impressive outing in the French Open, where her journey eventually came to an end as she lost in the semifinal to the current world number one Poland’s Iga Swiatek in straight sets with a score of 6-2, 6-4.
Her next-round opponent will be Tunisia’s Ons Jabeur, who booked her place in the last eight after beating Linda Noskova in the round of 16 with a score of 6-7, 6-3, 6-3. It will be the eighth meeting between the two players in professional tennis.
Gauff has a clear edge in the previous seven outings as she won on five occasions and suffered just two defeats. Their most recent meeting was in the quarterfinal of the French Open earlier this year, where the American tennis star came out on top with a score of 4-6, 6-2, 6-3.
