The Quarter-Finals are finally starting to take shape at the Berlin Ladies Open with Elena Rybakina, Anna Kalinskaya, Katerina Siniakova, Coco Gauff and Jessica Pegula all through in Germany.
Rybakina sporting a superb new green/teal number from Yonex on court prevailed over Veronika Kudermetova with the third seed now facing Victoria Azarenka who already sealed her route yesterday.
The Belarusian was one of only a few players who didn't need to return today in order to play with most of the matches washed out including Sabalenka who will play shortly in one of the only matches that has taken days to complete. She will play almost to the day since she was meant to play. While Rybakina returns tomorrow and looked superb in seeing off the Russian 6-4, 7-5 completing business. She will look to regain the Wimbledon title and given her grass prowess will be one of the favourites to do so.
Marketa Vondrousova won it the year after Rybakina but looks a major doubt to even play. The Czech ace who was in poor form as it is coming into Berlin was ahead against Anna Kalinskaya. She had a set point but slipped awkwardly on the grass and she attempted to play through the pain which handed the Russian a route back into the clash. But in reality, it was a bad move as she ended up retiring anyway after horrifically falling in the first place. A shame for Vondrousova who seems to have no luck on her side since winning Wimbledon just under 12 months ago.
Other winners were Katerina Siniakova who saw off Qinwen Zheng 6-4, 6-4. American duo Coco Gauff and Jessica Pegula won through too in the other ties today. The former will face off against either Linda Noskova or Ons Jabeur. While Pegula faces Siniakova. Gauff saw off Ekaterina Alexandrova 7-6, 6-2 and Pegula who lost early last week in Rosmalen saw off Donna Vekic 6-4, 7-5 to also reach the Quarter-Finals. So both American hopes are through to the latter stages.
