In a generational battle between British superstars, it was youngster Jack Draper who prevailed against elder statesman Andy Murray during their third round clash at the BNP Paribas Open Indian Wells on Monday night.
Draper recorded a 7-6(6) 6-2 win over the three-time Grand Slam champion, employing his exceptional serve-and-volley skills during their encounter. This skill-set was on full display in the first set, as Draper won 11 out of 13 points at the net. After both men exchanged breaks to keep the score tied at 6-6, the resulting tiebreak saw Draper increase his aggression by making fearless forays to the net. This tactic paid off, allowing the 21-year old to claim the opening set.
Not one to be deterred, Murray attempted a comeback, relying on his heart and fighting spirit. However, he was unable to muster enough to overwhelm Draper, who was unflappable on serve. The young Brit saved both break points faced, while capitalizing on two of his three break point chances. Despite Murray's miraculous comebacks over the past few weeks, the 35-year old finally ran out of gas as Draper closed out the match after two hours and 4 minutes.
With his first win over his legendary countryman secured, Draper advances to the round of 16 where he will face either reigning US Open champion Carlos Alcaraz or Dutch star Tallon Griekspoor.
