Jack Draper set for immediate Cincinnati return after tearful Canadian Open exit

Jack Draper will return to action at the Cincinnati Open next week despite the emotional scenes that followed his latest injury setback at the Canadian Open in Montreal. The British player left the court in tears after his first match since June, raising concerns about whether his US Open preparations had suffered another major blow.
The 24-year-old was making his comeback in Canada after a recurrence of the bone bruising that had previously kept him sidelined for almost seven months. Draper struggled physically during his match against Terence Atmane and eventually appeared unable to continue at his usual level, but the latest update suggests he will not need another extended absence from competition.
The setback came after another interrupted period for the former world No. 4, who had shown promising signs during his previous return at the Eastbourne Open. Draper reached the semifinal of the grass-court tournament in June after two months away from the Tour, but a wrist injury forced him to withdraw from Wimbledon and delayed his progress once again.
After also pulling out of the DC Open at the start of the North American hard-court swing, Draper finally returned at the Canadian Open. While his emotional exit created doubts about his availability for the upcoming weeks, the Brit has now been confirmed for Cincinnati, where he will look to regain confidence and valuable match rhythm before the US Open.
Draper continues comeback after another injury interruption
Draper’s current ranking situation reflects the impact of his repeated injury setbacks. He enters Cincinnati as world No. 143 and will not defend points from either the Canadian Open or Cincinnati Open after missing both tournaments in 2025.
The British player’s priority will be finding physical stability after another frustrating interruption. His previous comeback showed that he can quickly return to a high level when healthy, but maintaining consistency has been the biggest challenge during the last two seasons.
The US Open remains the biggest target of the upcoming weeks. Draper reached the semifinals at Flushing Meadows in 2025, although he was unable to compete in his scheduled match against Zizou Bergs due to injury. He will now hope Cincinnati can provide the necessary preparation to arrive in New York with confidence.
Draper is also expected to compete in the US Open mixed doubles event, where he will reunite with Jessica Pegula after the pair played together last year.
