Canadian Open Montreal ATP Day Five Round-Up | Alex de Minaur throws away Cameron Norrie tie as Rafa Jodar beats Musetti again

Amid all the rain delays in Toronto, it was less of an issue in Montreal albeit Alex de Minaur was bundled out by Cameron Norrie who saved a match point as a double fault proved costly for the Aussie at the Canadian Open. While Rafael Jodar continued to inflict misery on Lorenzo Musetti on Day Five of the tournament.

Norrie won through one of the comebacks of the year recovering from 5-7, 2-6 down and saved a match point to down the third seed at the Canadian Open. De Minaur double faulted while on match point at 5-2, 40-30 in the second set. Serving for it again, he suffered the same fate double faulting to surrender to Norrie and a break point.

Norrie earned a break to stay alive and swung freely from there holding advantage from there converting eight out of 13 chances to break to reach the fourth round. He now leads 4-3 in the series Head-to-Head wise, they've played three times this year already.

“The level was so high the first two sets,” Norrie said in his on-court interview. “From the beginning, [Alex] came out firing and I was like, ‘Woah, this is a crazy level’, and I had to match it. I managed to go up a break [in the first set], but he stayed really tough and I know he’s so tough as a competitor and stole that first set.

“He was looking good in the second set and I think he took the foot off the gas very slightly and I managed to free up, steal the tie-break and then it was just a battle. I was just trying to play point for point. No time to think. I just stayed point for point and I managed to win 6-1. It was a great match to win and to test my level and I can take so much confidence from this one.”

De Minaur was the highest seed remaining in the tournament, but now that is Ben Shelton. Up next for Norrie perhaps holds the key to maybe even the winner though as he faces Arthur Fils who produced one of the wins of the day to crush Mariano Navone 6-3, 6-2. The 22-year-old has advanced to at least the fourth round at four out of the five ATP Masters 1000 tournaments this year with the best results being semi-final runs in Miami and Madrid. He did not face a break point and won 91% of points behind his first serve.

Luciano Darderi also advanced taking down Shang Juncheng 4-6, 6-1, 6-4. Only the second event since February for Jerry and he saved five match points in his win over Andrey Rublev. While Rafa Jodar again impressed as he took down Lorenzo Musetti for his second win over him in a week.

He won in one hour and 35 minutes to reach the fourth round claiming it 6-4, 6-3. He won in Washington last week and the 19-year-old made sure history repeated itself. He earned a decisive break at 4-4 and claimed the set having won 11 points in a row. He dropped serve twice in the second, but he applied greater pressure and secured victory having converted six out of 11 break points earned.

"I think I did a great job in the return game," Jodar said. "Generally, I played very solid, trying to attack when I could. Lorenzo is a top player, so I knew I had to play pressure moments well. So I am super happy with my performance today."

Next is Jiri Lehecka who took down Alexander Blockx 6-3, 6-4. To end the night, Frances Tiafoe had an unfortunate end as he had to end his campaign injured withdrawing against Arthur Rinderknech 2-0 down in the second after losing 6-2. Finally Brandon Nakashima won a long drawn out affair with Titouan Droguet.

He went down a set at 6-4 and had to bring it back winning the second 6-2 before edging the decider 6-5 only breaking at the death 7-5 to claim the win and move through to the Last 16. This after it looked to be heading towards the tie-break. In addition Droguet initially saved match points but Nakashima finally won.
