Former world number 12 Feliciano Lopez has called the
current world number two
Carlos Alcaraz and Italy’s
Jannik Sinner as the two players
who are ‘out of the ordinary’.
Both youngsters are often regarded as two of the most
highly-rated players currently playing in the men’s singles category.
Lopez was recently quoted in a report where he stated that both
Alcaraz and Sinners are two players who are ‘out of the ordinary.
“When I talk to people and tell them that Andre Agassi won
eight Grand Slams and they answer me ‘just?’, well that’s the perception of
people who don’t know the world of tennis or sports,” he said.
“When a guy arrives and wins twenty-two, [it] greatly
detracts from what has happened before. And that is unfair too. That’s why we
have to value what there is, without comparing it with what there has been.
“Enjoying something that to me, especially Jannik Sinner and
Alcaraz, seem like two out of the ordinary. I think we have been very lucky
with the two of them, taking into account that we come from Federer, Nadal,
Djokovic, Andy Murray, etc… and nothing more.”
Both players are currently playing in the
Miami Open. Sinner
has already booked his place in the fourth round after beating Tallon Griekspoor
of the Netherlands with a score of 5-7, 7-5, 6-1. He will now face Australia’s Christopher
O'Connell in the round of 16 on Tuesday.
On the other hand, Alcaraz has booked his place in the round
of 32 after beating Roberto Carballés Baena in the second with a score of 6-2,
6-1. The two-time Grand Slam winner will now face France’s Gael Monfils in the
next round on Monday.
