Carlos
Alcaraz (No. 2) dominates
Gael Monfils (No. 47) with a 6-2, 6-4 victory,
advancing to the quarterfinals of the
Miami Open. After a promising start, the
2-times Grand Slam champion asserted himself from the baseline with his
forehand and capitalized on the Frenchman's physical issues to advance
comfortably.
In the
first set, both players had a solid start, with Monfils and Alcaraz winning
their initial service games with some engaging rallies from the baseline.
However, it didn't take long for the Frenchman to fall behind his opponent's
pace.
In the
fourth game, Alcaraz began a string of consecutive game wins, going from 1-2 to
6-2, winning 74% of the points played for the remainder of the set (63% from
the start). Monfils struggled with issues in his left foot and gradually
succumbed to Carlos's dominance.
The start
of the second set continued in Alcaraz's favor as he quickly went up 2-0.
However, Monfils mounted a slight comeback, defending his service and halting
Alcaraz's streak of seven consecutive games won by the recent Indian Wells
champion.
Although
Monfils tried to claw back into the match, a second break by Alcaraz dashed any
hopes for his opponent as Carlitos surged to a 4-1 lead. In the final games of
the match, both players pulled out their best tricks, understanding that the
match was virtually sealed, providing some entertaining exchanges for the
spectators.
The Spanish
player had a few lapses that led to him conceding one of the breaks while
Monfils managed to hold his service, but it was anecdotal for the 20-year-old
who ultimately clinched the victory by 6-2, 6-4 with a magnificent performance,
reaffirming his favoritism to achieve the Sunshine Double.
Alcaraz extended his winning streak to eight consecutive victories and awaits the
winner of the match between
Ben Shelton (No. 16) and Lorenzo Musseti (No. 23)
in the quarterfinals.
