Jannik Sinner could finish the
Miami Open as the world No. 2 following
Carlos Alcaraz's elimination against Grigor Dimitrov in the quarterfinals by 6-2, 6-4.
The Italian remains in contention in the tournament and is defending the points from last year's final, although if he secures the title, he will accumulate enough points to surpass Alcaraz.
In his quest for a spot in the final, he will face
Daniil Medvedev in a rematch of the 2024 Australian Open final two months ago. On that occasion, the 22-year-old tennis player claimed the title after coming back from two sets down.
The rivalry with Medvedev has already seen 10 encounters, with the Russian winning the first six matches, but Sinner managed to narrow the gap and won their last four meetings.
Sinner's current form and Alcaraz's recent defeat provide him with the opportunity to become the first Italian to reach the world No. 2 spot. At the moment, he has 8110 points in the live rankings, while the Spanish player has 8645. If Sinner clinches the title, he will reach 8710 points and start the clay season just behind Novak Djokovic.
The Serbian has 9725 points, and despite his absence in Miami and his early exit in Indian Wells against Luca Nardi, he remains comfortably at the top of the rankings.
