Italian tennis president Angelo Binaghi has heaped praise on
young star
Jannik Sinner after his heroics in the
Davis Cup.
The 22-year-old received some criticism from the 63-year-old
after pulling out of the Davis Cup qualifier earlier in the year. However, after
playing a big part in helping Italy in securing their first Davis Cup in more
than four decades, Binaghi was full of praise for Sinner.
“Who made a sensationally short-sighted assessment, wrong,
as we immediately tried to say,” he said. “I have maintained from day one that
it was legitimate, indeed desirable, to plan the season around the ATP Finals
in Turin and Davis Cup Finals in Malaga. I would like to say to Sinner to not
changing anything, absolutely nothing. To Berrettini for having better luck.”
It was Sinners’ performance in the semifinal which turned
out to be the turning point as he saved three match points against the world
number one Serbia’s Novak Djokovic and win the match with a score of 6-2, 2-6,
7-5 to ensure that Italy will remain alive in the hunt for a spot in the all-important
final.
The world number then teamed up with Lorenzo Sonego as the two
managed to defeat the pair of Djokovic and Miomir Kecmanovic in the
all-important decider in straight sets with a score of 6-3, 6-4. Italy then
defeated Australia in the final with a score of 2-0.
