Judy Murray
and Jannik Sinner's coach, Darren Cahill, have responded to the International
Tennis Integrity Agency's (ITIA) ruling that cleared British tennis player Tara
Moore of doping charges. The 31-year-old athlete lost 19 months away from the
Tour during the process. Moore achieved her career-best ranking as world No.
145 in 2017, securing 9 ITF titles and reaching the second round at Wimbledon.
Moore was
suspended in May 2022 after testing positive for the anabolic steroid
boldenone. However, she, along with Chilean player Barbara Gatica, was recently
acquitted, with the ITIA stating they "bore no fault or negligence for
their adverse analytical findings and are therefore not subject to a period of
ineligibility."
Judy Murray, mother of Andy Murray and his former coach, reacts to the decision of the ITIA: "So
happy to see Tara Moore cleared by an independent panel after testing positive
for anabolic steroids boldenone + nandrolone during WTA Bogotá in April last
year. Panel agreed she had consumed contaminated meat + her provisional
suspension has been lifted after 19 months."
"Tara
had just broken into the top 100 and become the British #1 doubles player. 19
months is a long time to lose at any stage of a player's career, and you can’t
put a price on the emotional + financial stress involved in clearing your
name," Murray added.
Darren
Cahill, the current coach of world No. 4 Jannik Sinner, also emphasized the
detrimental impact of the time Tara Moore spent away from tennis on her career.
He expressed his concern about the timeline, stating, "This timeline is so
bad. It’ll take Tara 18-24 months to recover her rankings if everything goes
perfectly. Tennis is a unique sport where we are wiped out & back to zero
after 12 months. The @WTA should reinstate her rankings or at the very least
provide provisional rankings," Cahill said.
