Former German tennis star
Angelique Kerber is looking set to
return to the court in 2024 with pictures appearing on social media.
The 35-year-old is set to return to professional tennis
after a break of 18 months after becoming a mother in February earlier this
year. In a picture that appeared on social media platform X — previously known
as Twitter — Kerber can be seen with a matching tennis racquet for a newborn.
In a recent interview, Kerber highlighted what she expected
would be her biggest challenge once she returns to playing tennis at the highest
level.
"Of course I'm really looking forward to it," she
said. "But of course I'm also a bit nervous because I can't guess how I
will perform and what it will be like. I'm prepared and fit enough to give
myself the best chance of getting back to the level I was at.
“But I haven't played any matches for an extremely long
time," added the former world number one. That will be the most difficult
thing to assess. That's why I have to openly admit that I first have to find
out where I really stand."
Kerber is a three-time Grand Slam winner. She won the
Australian Open in 2016 after beating legendary tennis player and former world number one Serena Williams in the final with a score of 6–4,
3–6, 6–4.
Later that year, the Bremen-born won the US Open after getting
the better of Czech Republic’s Karolína Pliskova with a score of 6–3, 4–6, 6–4.
Her last major triumph came in 2018 when she lifted the Wimbledon title after once
again beating Serena in the final in straight sets with a score of 6-3,
6-3.
Kerber became the world number one in 2016 and also went on
to win the Bronze medal in the 2016 Olympics after losing the final of the women’s
singles category to Monica Puig of Puerto Rico with a score of 6–4, 4–6, 6–1.
