Jannik
Sinner's (No. 3) stellar start to the year continues as he defeated Jiri
Lehecka (32nd) 6-3, 6-3 to reach the semifinals of
Indian Wells for the second
consecutive year. Without much challenge from the Czech player, the Australian
Open champion played his game and secured the victory.
Sinner
boasts a record of 36-2 since the 2023 US Open in August of last year.
Additionally, the Italian has a perfect 16-0 record in 2024, one of the best
streaks since 1990, surpassed only by the Big-3 and Pete Sampras.
In the
first set, Sinner, as usual, had an impeccable first serve of 74%, winning 82%
of them, compared to Lehecka's 68% and 65%, respectively. Sinner got his first
break opportunities in the third game and capitalized on his fourth chance to
take the lead.
Lehecka was
more accurate with his service to avoid further trouble and had a break
opportunity when the score was 4-3 in favor of Sinner. However, the Italian
remained solid, and in the next game, he created more break chances to finally
secure the set 6-3. World No. 3 made just one unforced error, taking advantage
of Lehecka's 11.
In the
second set, notably, Sinner's first serve wasn't as effective (37%), but his
shot consistency allowed him to win 74% of his points nonetheless. Once again,
Sinner created a couple of break opportunities and seized the moment to take
the lead.}
With the
score at 5-2, Lehecka struggled with his service and had to save a couple of
match points from his opponent. Despite holding his serve, Sinner ultimately
sealed the victory with his own service at 6-3, 6-3.
The
semifinals could delight fans with a new showdown between Sinner and Carlos
Alcaraz, one of the most exciting rivalries of recent times. The Spanish player
won't have an easy path forward, as he faces the world No. 6
Alexander Zverev,
who recently defeated him in the quarterfinals of the Aussie Open.
